In the late eighties, Van Christie and Jim Marcus were performance artists working in Chicago clubs on their own. Their first show ever was at the historic Medusa''s Nightclub and was less about music than destruction and visual mayhem. After a performance at the Limelight that resulted in the closing of the room and a liberal amount of Press Coverage, they were invited to join the Fiction records roster alongside the Cure, Eat and the Associates, to be distributed by Polydor in the US. They released "I've Got To Make Sense" in 1988 as a single in support of Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign, charting at 23 on Billboard's dance chart and topping college club charts across the country.
